Andreas Mikkelsen leads the penultimate round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, the RACMSA Rally of Scotland, at the end of Day 1 by 50.7 seconds, after a masterful display of driving through the wet and muddy Perthshire forests in his ŠKODA UK Motorsport Fabia S2000.
Having established a 28.6 second advantage after the morning’s loop of three stages, he and co-driver Ola Fløene headed out for a repeat run in the afternoon, following service at Perth airport.
Andreas’ super-smooth and fast style saw him set fastest times on both repeat runs through Craigvinean and Errochty, which extended his lead to 50.7 seconds. All that remained was a second run through Drummond Hill at night (SS8), but this was cancelled due to the condition of the roads.
“It’s been a great day,” said Andreas. “We pushed quite hard and in such slippery conditions it wasn’t always possible to have complete control of the car all of the time! He had a few small moments, including one at the beginning of Errochty [SS5]. We were a little bit too fast at the beginning and slid a little too sideways on a fast left corner. After that we found a good pace and kept pushing without another moment and set a really good time.
“We have a nice lead now, but it’s still a long way to go tomorrow that we cannot back off too much. In these Super 2000 cars, if you ease off a little it’s easy to lose a lot of time – and it’s also easy to lose your concentration. I want to continue at a good pace and try to maintain our lead to the finish.”
The final day of the Rally of Scotland takes place tomorrow. Starting at 07.12, the event returns to Stirlingshire for another run through Carron Valley prior to two new tests, Loch Chon and the giant 16.15 mile (26km) High Corrie, that will each be tackled twice. The final two stages will be in the majestic grounds of Scone Palace, which will also host the Ceremonial Finish at 17.30, after the completion of all 15 stages and 124.33 miles (200.09kms) of competition.
