wo more rising stars will be handed the chance to convince Volkswagen Motorsport bosses that they are deserving of a drive in the firm's Polo R World Rally Car in the future when they contest ADAC Rallye Deutschland next month.

Christian Riedemann, from Germany [pictured left above], and Dutchman Hans Weijs [right above] will pilot a brace of VW-run Skoda Fabia Super 2000s on the Trier-based event as Volkswagen continues its young driver search ahead of its full debut in the series in 2013.

They will follow in the footsteps of Joonas Lindroos and Andreas Mikkelsen, who will contest Neste Oil Rally Finland later this month as part of the scheme.

“We’ve again selected two young drivers who have already shown great potential in their brief careers,” said Kris Nissen, the director of Volkswagen Motorsport [pictured middle, above] “They are now receiving the unique opportunity to [demonstrate their ability] in the toughest competitive conditions for a slot in the Volkswagen rally team.”

Both drivers are highly rated with Weijs expected to build on his impressive Super 2000 debut in a Fabia on the Ypres Rally in Belgium last month, where he finished third in a highly competitive field. Riedemann, who will be driving an S2000 car for the first time, is stepping down from his FIA WRC Academy programme to take up VW’s offer. A replacement for his ADAC-supported seat will be announced shortly.

Twenty-three-year-old Riedemann, who will be co-driven by Michael Wenzel, said his participation in the WRC Academy had been pivotal in him landing the VW opportunity. “The WRC Academy plays a major role in my development of becoming a professional rally driver,” he said. “The competition is pretty fierce and those who prove their skills here may have the chance to move up into a higher series later.”

Weijs, 24, has been largely absent from competition this season following his impressive two-year stint in the Junior World Rally Championship with the KNAF Talent First operation due to a lack of budget. He conceded following his podium finish in Ypres that he had no more funding left to continue competing alongside Belgian co-driver Bjorn Degandt, who will partner him in Germany.

The Fabias will carry ‘Wings for Life’ branding when they compete in Germany. The charity promotes research into spinal injuries and lists Sebastien Vettel among its ambassadors. The event takes place from 18-21 August.
