Skoda wil punten pakken in de beroemde rally van Sicilie, de TARGA FLORIO

Kopecký & Dresler to make their first-ever appearance in Targa Florio. The other factory Fabia Super 2000 to be driven by reigning IRC Champion Andreas Mikkelsen. Sicily has become part of the IRC calendar for the first time in history.

ŠKODA looks to continue its string of good performances in the fifth event of the 2012 IRC Championship to take place in Sicily. Jan Kopecký & Pavel Dresler of ŠKODA Motorsport (factory team) are going to make their first-ever appearance in this event. The other factory Fabia Super 2000 will be driven by reigning IRC champions Andreas Mikkelsen & Ola Floene of ŠKODA UK Motorsport.

Taking place in Sicily and also known as the Targa Florio, the fifth event of this year's IRC series has replaced the originally planned rally in Hungary to become part of the IRC calendar for the first time in history.

Jan Kopecký before the Sicilian Rally: “This is a new event in the IRC calendar, and I am sure the Italian “hawks” will be pretty fast. With a limited number of routes to be done repeatedly, the format of this rally is rather unusual, and there will be no space for any mistakes. Pavel and I are already looking forward a great deal to this new challenge”.

The rally is also part of the Italian Championship. With just five different routes to be done repeatedly, the format of the event is rather unusual.

The programme includes 11 special stages in total (170 kilometres).

Rally Targa Florio - Day 1 15.06.2012 ŠKODA Fabia Super 2000s lead the famous Targa Florio Sicilian Rally after the first leg. Factory’ car drivers Andreas Mikkelsen and Jan Kopecký occupy the first two places. The fifth race in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge around Palermo, in Sicily, is run in typical local conditions—it is dry and there are high temperatures exceeding 30 degrees. After the first leg, consisting of seven special stages, Andreas Mikkelsen and Ola Floene lead in a factory Fabia Super 2000.Jan Kopecký and Pavel Dresler are in second, a mere 4.5 seconds back. Fourth place is currently held by the domestic duo of Scandola/D’Amore, racing in a private Fabia Super 2000 with support from ŠKODA’s Italian importer.

Jan Kopecký: “We’re trying to drive fast, but not make a mistake. “The track is fast, the type of asphalt changes frequently. It’s very slippery and bouncy in places. The gaps between drivers are small; it’s going to be real tough.

The Sicilian Rally continues on Saturday with four time trials with a total length of 68 kilometres.
