Weijs "honoured" by Colin McRae IRC Trophy
Hans Weijs said he was “really honoured” to receive the Colin McRae IRC Flat Out Trophy for finishing third on the GEKO Ypres Rally, round five of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge.
The Dutchman, who was making his competitive debut in a ŠKODA Super 2000 car, drove virtually without error to clinch the final podium spot on the back of a two-hour pre-event test to acclimatise to his ŠKODA Fabia S2000, which he shared with Belgian co-driver Bjorn Degandt.
“He was a great driver, one of the best in the world and I’m really honoured to receive this award,” said the 24-year-old Weijs. “His style was so nice and when I started rally he was somebody I saw on the movies. I crashed a lot in the beginning and my dad said Colin McRae also crashed a lot at the start. I wanted to follow Colin but not like that because it was much too expensive and we did not have the money to continue like this. Hopefully some people will see me with this award and maybe I can go forward in my career.”
Weijs was chosen as the winner by a three-person panel consisting of the IRC’s Motorsport Development manager Jean-Pierre Nicolas, Gilbert Roy, the Director of Editorial and Programme Development for Eurosport Events and Jimmy McRae, Colin’s father.
The Colin McRae IRC Flat Out Trophy is presented on all rounds of the IRC. Other winners this season include defending IRC champion Juho Hänninen and Peugeot driver Thierry Neuville.
