Skoda UK driver Andreas Mikkelsen has now taken the lead of the Italian Gravel Championship as well, after winning the Rally San Marino.
“We came to this rally to win,” said the 22-year-old Norwegian. “The strategy was to take a lead and maintain it carefully. The first day of the rally was difficult though, especially when it started to rain. Our tyre choice wasn’t perfect but it was good enough and, more importantly, was better than our competitors, giving us enough advantage to take a good lead. On the second day we watched our competitors carefully and maintained a comfortable lead without pushing so hard that we made errors.”
This was Mikkelsen’s second win out of three starts on the Italian series – but he will be forced to miss the next round, the Rally San Crispino, as he is going to be competing in the Azores on the Intercontinental Rally Challenge.
Mikkelsen is currently seventh in the Eurosport-backed series, having suffered the indignity of two early retirements in Monte Carlo and Ypres.
After winning in San Marino, Mikkelsen flew back to the United Kingdom to take part in the Goodwood Festival of Speed, demonstrating his Fabia S2000 to passengers on the Forest Rally Stage.
