The production plant in the Chinese industrial metropolis of Shanghai was officially opened in 1984 as a joint venture between the Volkswagen Group and the Chinese company SAIC. The mass production of Volkswagen models, in particular the Santana models, which are very popular in China, began there one year later.
In 2005 the factory’s production program was expanded to include ŠKODA models; starting with the Octavia, and later followed by the Fabia, Superb and other models.
6 ŠKODA models are currently produced at the Shanghai Volkswagen production plants in Anting (Fabia, Yeti), Yizheng (Rapid, Rapid Spaceback) and Ningbo (Octavia, Superb).
Since the brand first entered the Chinese market, more than 1.1 million ŠKODA cars have rolled off the production lines at SVW in China.
